Highlights of Mt. Monbetsu
Climbing Mt. Monbetsu (altitude 866m)
When you arrive at Shikotsuko Onsen and look around, you'll notice a mountain with several antennas on its peak. This mountain is Mt. Monbetsu. The trailhead is about a 5-minute walk from the parking lot at Shikotsuko Onsen, heading towards Sapporo.
There is a sign indicating the trailhead on the right side of the road. The road
is paved with asphalt all the way to the summit, but private vehicles are prohibited from entering.
On a clear day, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Lake Shikotsu, as well as the cityscapes of Sapporo and Tomakomai, and even the Pacific Ocean and the Hidaka Mountains.
The mountain's name comes from Mo-Pet (quiet river), which is the same origin as Monbetsu in the Okhotsk Sea and Monbetsu in Hidaka.

View from the summit
Mount Tarumae and Mount Fuppushi can be seen directly across the lake. The starting point, Lake Shikotsu Onsen town, also looks like a miniature model.

Flowers on the hiking trail
Although the course to Mt. Monbetsu is paved all the way to the summit, one of its great attractions is the abundance of flowers you can encounter along the way.
